Polar Air Intelligent Fan Coils are a new fan coil generation conceived as an individual intelligent point of control, designed to manage airflow and water flow parameters to ensure optimum unit performance and maximize comfort needs.
They provide heating and cooling to indoor spaces according to the desired set point while minimizing central plant resources. The intelligent fan coil controller continuously monitors space temperature, water temperature, fan speed and valve position to match the needs of the space with the capacity of the system.
The Polar Air intelligent fan coil offers the innovative, dynamic auto-balancing feature using delta T management. Currently, the control of fan coils is limited to separate water flow control and airflow control in the industry. The demand for the space is not directly linked to the control of the system. The use of pressure independent control valves (PIC-V) seeks to solve this however, the operation of the PIC-V simply makes a linear relationship between valve position and flow, independent of the space conditions. The Polar Air system modulates water flow and air flow together to directly match space load with system output while maintain a constant delta T on the water side.
The controls packaged with the fan coil as standard give Polar Air the advantage over competitors. Competitive fan coil manufacturers either do not offer controls or offer very limited controls. In most cases, in order to even approach the same level of flow control and delta T management, additional controls and specialized valves need to be added on site. The Polar Air intelligent Fan Coil offers superior control with simple modulating valves and no additional flow balancing or limiting devices. This eliminates the additional leak points with additional piping components, eliminates the need for a balancing contractor to “set-up” the flow for each unit and reduces the overall cost of installation and ownership of the product.
The Polar Air Intelligent Fan coils have the potential to change the industry by forcing competitors to develop on-board controls. This product proves that BMS level controllability is possible with on-board fan coil unit controls. The value that the building owners receive by not having to pay $800 to $1000 per control point in addition to the fan coil will become evident very quickly. In addition, the technology can be adapted to other types of hydronic equipment to connect the space needs directly to the system capacity to further enhance operational efficiency.
