Automatic Dynamic Balancing for Improved HVAC Performance and Efficiency

In any hydronic system utilizing fan coil units, performance and efficiency is greatly affected by how well the system is designed and commissioned. For the design, we rely on the expertise of trained professional engineers however, the commissioning occurs on site and requires trained professionals to perform the work. One aspect of the commissioning is the balancing of the water distribution system.

The design and sizing of a fan coil system is calculated based on the demand at the peak load of the building. The calculations will determine an ideal flow rate that is required to achieve the necessary capacity for that peak load. In order to ensure that the system uses that ideal flow rate, the system needs to be balanced. Currently, most suppliers of fan coil units require some kind of external device to ensure proper water flow. These devices range in cost and complexity from a simple manual balancing valve to a pressure independent control valve; each with their own advantages and disadvantages. Furthermore, all of these systems only adjust water flow while neglecting air side control.

Polar Air fan coil units offers a different, and better solution to the needs of water flow balancing with the Auto Dynamic Balancing System while including air side optimization. Each Polar Air Intelligent Series Fan Coil includes a microprocessor based controller that senses water temperatures and air temperatures continuously. Using this data, control algorithms dynamically adjust the airflow and modulate a control valve to optimize space comfort while maintaining a proper delta T. The Auto Dynamic Balancing System ensures that all of the energy intended for the space is able to be delivered at peak efficiency. This optimization results in further gains at other points in the system. All of the components of the system, from chillers and boilers to the pumps, are subject to the dynamic changes that occur within the spaces. The Polar Air i-series fan coils are the connection point between the space and the system and allows for those deeper optimizations and efficiency gains.

In a marketplace full of fan coil options, there are very few differentiators. Polar Air fan coil units offer one such differentiator in the different options for packaged control options. Not only are all Polar Air fan coils shipped with on board controls, but different options are available to suit the individual project needs.

As different projects require different levels of control, we start with our flexible control offering in our W-type controller. This control PCB offers interconnection with 24 volt room thermostats and third party low voltage digital controllers with on-board control logic for condensate pumps, louvers (on highwall or cassette units) and alarm functions. For models equipped with EC motors, the W-control PCB allows for modulating fan control with an external speed signal and adjustable fan speed set-points. Other functionality includes freeze protection alarm, float switch shutdown and motor failure alarms.

For projects with more sophisticated controls requirements, Polar Air offers the Intelligent Series controller in all fan coil models. This control PCB offers all of the functions of the W-type controller plus features for enhanced controllability and connectivity. The i-series controller is equipped with native ModBus RTU protocol for directly connection to a building management system. Dozens of parameters are available to be read or written over the BMS network. Additionally, as a stand-alone system, the i-series controller is capable of controlling 2-way and modulating control valves for 2-pipe or 4-pipe systems, 6-way valves and modulating fan speed operation (with EC motors). With water and air sensors, i-series includes the Auto Dynamic Balancing System which allows for active delta T management while optimizing space comfort. Polar Air fan coil controls are intended to optimize performance while minimizing installation time and cost.

In any industry, it’s important to always use the right tool for the job. Using something that is “close enough” usually ends in a less-than-ideal result. For design engineers, the same concept is true when selecting fan coil units. It’s important to select the correct fan coil unit for the need of the space. Selecting a fan coil that is “close enough” usually results in poor performance, excessive noise and an unattractive appearance; none of which are part of an ideal space.

The extensive offering is more than just different styles. Within each model line, different configuration options are available. Most models are available in 2-pipe or 4-pipe configurations with sizes ranging from 1 kilowatt (6,000 BTU/Hr) to over 50 kilowatt (192,000 BTU/Hr). Further enhancing the offerings, coil configurations can be selected including 3-row, 4-row, 6-row and combinations of cooling rows and heating rows.
